His oeuvre offers an opportunity to analyze the possibilities, conditions, developments, and problems of the typography of his era. Based on extensive documentation, this study examines the impact of economic, aesthetic, and technological factors on his work as well as Zapf’s efforts to enhance his reputation in other fields.
